Virus

A virus particle consist of a protein coating containing the viral DNA or RNA. Thevirus particle is very small, often on the order of a few tens up to a few hundred nanometers, and require an electron microscope in order to study them. They regulate phenomena such as algal blooms i the oceans and cause diseases in both plants, animals and humans. They are parasitic and require a host organism to reproduce, which has spawned a discussion about whether they are living organisms or not. We do not work directly with viruses at industridoktorn, in the sense that we do not cultivate them in the laboratory, but we do work with techniques for virus detection in event-driven sampling.
